 River Birch      Betula nigra
The cinnamon-colored, exfoliating bark of the River Birch is spectacular in the winter. Lustrous, medium-green leaves turning yellow in fall for a short time. Borer resistant. Avoid very alkaline soils. Tolerant of wet sites. Deer resistant. Graceful, lacey and airy tree, so muliple stemmed trees are perferred to thicken up the canopy. Interesting exfoliating (peeling) bark. The bark exfoliates which allows the tree to photosynthesise better.  It  allows the tree to grow faster. Birch gets away with this, because they normally grow where water is plentiful. Peeling trees are useful for cities and towns, because they trap particulates from the air.
