Russian Hawthorn Crataegus ambigua
Interesting, horizontal twisting branches with short thin thorns form a small tree or large shrub with a rounded habit. Soft green, finely cut leaves turn to shades of yellow, orange, and red in fall. White flowers are followed by red berries that persist into winter and are a great source for wildlife. Well suited for reclamation , farm and ranch use. Commercial properties and homeowners may opt for a better shaped thornless hawthorn that has the same attributes such as Thornless Cockspur Hawthorn or Washington Hawthorn. Washington or Winter King Hawthorn is NOT suited for elevations over 6,000ft! If in the high Plains or Palmer divide if your planting in these areas choose Russian, Toba, or Thornless Cockspur.
